Bristol’s Top halal restaurants

If you know me, you know I love my food and I am a big foodie. I’ve decided to put a completion of Bristol’s top halal restaurants; focusing on top grill and burger joints. This is my first food blog review and hopefully I will follow this with asian cuisine on my next article. I will mainly focus this guide for the Muslim community that struggle to find places to eat that’s halal and exceptionally good at the same time.

This guide is based on my favourite places to eat, not a general list of every existing restaurant out on the streets of Bristol. They have all been tasted, tested and endured with many visits. In no particular order here are a list of my top  favourite Halal restaurants in Bristol:

Beirut Mezze, City Centre

Start of my list, previously known as Mezze Palace. It’s a discreet place, is a perfect getaway for all dinners to enjoy a classic Lebanese food. Everything on the menu is 100% halal.

Lona Restaurant, Gloucester rd

By far the best Lebanese chargrilled meats and meze dishes in Bristol. It’s a nice casual, plenty space with a colourful, central juice bar. Everything in this restaurant is halal, good to say, you can go all in and eat until you can eat no more.

Iron Grill, Easton

Iron Grill - shop entranceBy far the best Halal burger place in Bristol. I couldn’t agree more with the comment below:
“I had a few of their burgers on many visits to the shop. Always shockingly amazing, and always like it’s the first time! Quality of the meat is spot on. Meat is full of flavour and juicy too. They have a great menu to choose from, and they top it off nicely with a wide range of milkshakes. I would keep visiting and would recommend this place to anyone. Keep up the good food!” A Rahman on google reviews
One more thing to add the brioche buns are amazing and please don’t change it for cheap alternatives because it is good just the way they are 🙂

Almedina Grill house, Stokes Croft

I’ve tried this place and I got to say Lona has competition because there flavours on each dish are mouth watering. The Chicken and Lamb shawarma is the best I’ve had in a very long time. There platters are reasonable priced and they give very good portions and it’s very tasty. Check out a full review of Almedina Grill and juice bar here by  Here are what some of the customers are saying about this place:

If you love meat, this place is for you! A mixed grill teamed with a lovely fresh tabbouleh and fattoush was a real lunchtime treat. Nestled in the increasingly popular area of Stokes Croft, this independent restaurant is certainly one to try!   Pegah

Taz’s Gourmet Grill Steak and Burgers, Fishpond

This is the only 100% HMC Steak/Grillhouse that Bristol has been waiting for and I am so glad they are still standing there.

I have visited this place once or twice, I usually do, just to get some idea on how the place is in terms of consistency. I also look at other reviews from the public to determine if it makes it on to The Jax blog. I have to say there service has been good both times I visited, this might be the fact that on both occasions it was not busy at peak times. Once, the food came out, it was very quick. The steaks were really good, tasty, full of flavour. However, it was very oily and just cooked to a well done standard, this happend on both occasions, when I did ask for a medium rare. first time, I went were with some of my mates and we ordered the platter, which unusual for steak place but and it was good, nothing special.

Here is what one reviewer has said on tripadvisor:

So I’ve been meaning to try Taz’s for a while now. So me the wife and my boy tried it. Fantastic little place that catered for children I had a top notch T Bone steak with mushroom Sauce and the wife had a chicken Fillet steak all nice and juicy and well seasoned. I can’t understand why they are not busy??? Definitely worth a visit. Tank M

They have great offers on facebook so keep an eye out.

Nando’s, Longwell green, Bristol

nandos halal shop photo

The famous Nando’s. If you want your cheeky bit of Nando’s then the halal one to try is located at Aspects Leisure Park, Longwell green.   Only the Chicken is Halal despite what you have heard about the other one in Bristol being halal. This one is the only HFA/HCE and approved. My review on this is that they sell the best Afro-Portuguese serving flamed-grilled chicken that you can ask for, with their unique spicy chilli sauce selection. Favourite item on the menu – Sunset burger, chips and corn on the cob. A bit of mash and spicy rice – That’s me.

Alternately, dinners that enjoys Nando’s also should check out Peri Peri Corner. Which is more of a fast-food place but it’s place to try, especially if you like it with that extra, extra hot sauce with your chicken. You can find peri peri corner located in Clifton and 2 branches in Easton. You’ll probably have a more pleasurable dining experience at the Clifton branch.

Las Iguanas, Harbourside, Bristol

las iguanas front

Yes! Las iguanas is Halal, in fact all the restaurants in Bristol are Halal. This includes the chicken, lamb and duck dishes. However, do ask because some may have changed in various locations. My regular one I visit is located in Harbourside. Try not to pick a time too late in the evening, it does get busy and it may not be the ideal place to be when all the happy hour drinkers are coming in. Two dishes which I always pick is the blazing bird and the Lamb albondigas :).

Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Park Street, Bristol

This photo of GBK is courtesy of

It’s great because it’s GBK and it’s halal. The burgers are always on point and you get free peanuts whilst you wait (We all muslamics love a freebie). It’s a unlikely choice on the list but a great option to visit with your work colleagues or school/university friends that are non muslim. But always remember to ask if they are halal because only the breaded chicken burgers are halal on the menu.

Best places for lunch:

St Nicholas Market

This is possibly the best places to go when it comes to lunch around city. You can find stalls that have the world’s food under one roof. This place is ideal for Vegetarians, vegans and Halal diners. You have Moroccan, Indian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern, English and European food at your finger tips to choose from.

Just ensure you ask the market stall trader if there meat is halal before you order and don’t just assume it is.

Matina, St Nickholas market

Matina 600 x 300

In St. Nicholas Market, Matina always has a long queue. For a fiver, you can get freshly grilled lamb, chicken or halloumi and salad in a large, home made, freshly cooked naan bread wrap. Staff are friendly and the food quality is excellent, definitely worth the price. They accept cash, card and contactless” T Shortland, Google review

“It’s amazing, best wraps anywhere. The flatbreads they use are baked fresh everyday and they’ve got a great mix of grilled meats, salads, and sauces. Get there as early in a lunch hour as you can or be prepared to wait a while as it’s very popular.” Eliot Collins, Google Review. I couldn’t agree more with both reviews, it’s spot on and good things do come to those who wait patiently (Sabr).
